Photovoice is an excellent training tool for anyone who wants to assist those living with a mental illness in their process of recovery. This is a multimedia presentation with 40 photographic images and narratives portraying the experience of mental illness and recovery from the perspectives of eight psychiatric survivors living in Thunder Bay.
The Photovoice project took place over 9 month period. Participants explored their journey of recovery through the use of disposable cameras and group discussions. Powerful images complimented with articulate and often poetic narratives, illustrate the devastation caused by mental illness as well as the innate strength, courage and determination of those who strive for wellness and recovery.
Participants will learn about the experience of living with a mental illness, the barriers to recovery, the tools needed from within each person and from the community to achieve wellness, and how professionals and volunteers can enhance their ability to assist individuals in the recovery process
Workshop Length: one half to full day session
Fees: an honourariam is required for the photovoice artists facilitating the workshop.
