The Importance of Emphathy Workshop
May 5, 2022
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
During the many challenging events of the past 2 years, it has been very interesting to observe how many people displayed acts of empathy towards others, while others simply did not. Unfortunately, it appears that a decline in empathy is an ongoing trend that has been occurring for some time.
An American study conducted over a decade ago found that empathy has been decreasing significantly over the past 30 years. This is partly because as a society, people feel less connected to those around them, and they are less understanding of those outside their immediate social circle.
As such, people are more likely to focus on their own immediate needs and concerns before considering others. This is troubling, as empathy is directly connected to behaviours that benefit society and it is strongly linked to our mental health and well-being.
Given these associations, it is important that we learn to foster empathy in ourselves and find ways to encourage empathy in others. And if the current pandemic has taught us anything, hopefully there is a greater understanding of how inextricably linked we all are in this world.
To support people in this endeavor, Sullivan + Associates Clinicial Psychology are proud to be partnering with the Canadian Mental Health Association Thunder Bay Branch to offer a free workshop that will explain how empathy is related to behaviour and mental health, as well as how to increase our levels of empathy and encourage empathy in others.
